I have googled and seen Apple's notes on this but my Iphone 5s on ios7.0.4 does not sync new contacts created in iphone to my gmail account.
And yes, gmail to iphone works, just not the other way around
Contacts are enabled and gmail is default.
Is this a known issue or is there a workaround?

Got it to work but had to disable icloud contacts sync despite this was not the Default account.

I have the same problem. Contacts sync without problem between iOS devices (iPad 2 and iPhone 5s both running iOS7), and from GMail to iOS devices. But from the devices to GMail is NOT working. I tried, as suggested above, disabling iCloud syncing but it seems to have no effect.
Any other help??? Not such a seamless experience...
