Are you talking about a passcode to unlock the phone or more along the lines of an apple id password?

Restoring your iPhone to an older version of what? Do you mean you're using iPhone to restore an encrypted back up to your phone? If so, the password is whatever password you used when you encrypted the back up.

Basically my son got his older sister's iPhone so I backed up his phone, and now I'm trying to restore his new phone info to the new phone.  When I clicked "restore" it's asking for a password.  I've tried my Itunes password, and the phone's access code and I can't get in.

If I don't remember the password when I encrypted the backup -- how do I retrieve that?

Thanks so much for your help.

If you can't remember the password to the backup, you can't use the backup.  From here...

Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.

If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

You might just do the backup again but turn the encrypt backups option off

this article might help too, but i don't think there is a way to retrieve the password
