Q: automatic login in mavericks not working. I still have to enter user name and password

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Did you activate FileVault, by any chance?

This was happening to me too. I fixed it by doing the following:

1. Disable Guest account

2. Restart

3. Disable auto login for my user

4. Restart

5. Enable auto login for my user

6. Restart!
