Q: Weird behavior with Mavericks and VGA display

I recently upgraded from a 4 year old 13" MBP to a 13" Retina Display MBP, so I'm not sure if this problem is Mavericks or the new MBP, but my gut says it's Mavericks.

I am connecting to a Panasonic TV using a Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor connected to my Thunderbolt port. Within the past year, using my old MBP and OSX 10.8, I used the exact same adaptor and the exact same cable and the exact same TV with no problems. Here's the weird behavior:

  • The TV screen has a transparent menu bar. Never used to have any menu bar. The computer screen has an opaque menu bar just like it always did. "Arrange Displays" shows the menu bar on the computer as it should.
  • I used to be able to have an application window show on both screens (i.e., half on the computer screen and half on the TV). Now, the window has to be wholly contained on one screen. It shows on both screen as I drag it, but as soon as I release it, it pops back to the screen it started on.
  • With a PowerPoint presentation displayed, moving my Logitech mouse (which is connected wirelessly through a USB port), the PPT disappears from the TV, and clicking on the PPT window on my computer does nothing. If I click in the computer window to make Finder active, the PPT presentation returns. Sometimes. Not always. Again, nothing like this has ever happened before.

I tried the adaptor in both Thunderbolt ports. Same problem.
