iMac Dashboard "Drag A Picture" Widget Issues

I frequently use the dashboard widget called "drag a picture"...

Today the widget seemed to stop working, as saved images no longer appeared on my desktop?

One time, several copied images did appear on my desktop, all at once - yet, 10 minutes later...

Nor are said images listed there when I open the Finder...

However, in posting blog entries, I was able to upload the images - therein, listed as being on the desktop, but not visible outside of the uploading process...

What gives? Any advice is appreciated, thank you.
