Retina Macbook Pro with Mavericks freezes

So ever since I upgraded to OS X Mavericks I've been having a really annoying issue. Usually around once a day (or every couple of days) my computer will freeze. First usually one program freezes (like Google Chome or Microsoft Word) and then when I open up the Force Quit window other applications will start freezing (as well as the Force Quit window itself!) and after a little bit my entire computer is just frozen. I've found that the only way to fix this issue is to force my computer to restart by holding down the power button. I've tried writing to Apple about this (multiple times!) but haven't gotten a single response. If you have any ideas on what might be causing this or how I could try fixing it that would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps, I have a 2012 15-inch Macbook Pro with Retina Display.

Thanks in advance!

I find unacceptable that such a big problem has not been taken seriously by Apple. This is not the Apple that we knew. I have used Apple products for decades. At present I own at least 5 or 6 Apple devices and I feel ****** off. I posted a not reporting this very same problem and all I got was a "canned" answer suggesting all the obvious things that anyone knows.

I installed 10.9.3 with the hope that the problem has been solved. I got my answer the next day with the dreaded freeze of death.

Apple´s reputation of quality products is eroding fast with this problem. I would not recommend a MacBook Pro to anyone.

Hi all,

I have been struggling with the same problem as all of you. I ran into this tread (*), explaining that there is an incompatibility between Mavericks (in particular when running the TimeMachine) and Sophos 8 or 9. Disabling the on-access/live scanning solved the problem for me. Hope this helps.

Wanted to say that I used to have this problem occuring once or twice per day. Now, one week after implementing the trick above, I have been freeze-free.

Been suffering the freeze problem since I update my Macbook Pro Retirna (2.3 GHz, Intel 7, 16 GB) to Mavericks. The problem seems to be worse when I put the Macbook to sleep and I try to wake it up later. Sometimes, when the Macbook is in sleep mode, it will restart itself.

I have tried, repairing permits, checked hard drive, software compatibility (don't use many programs other than Microsoft office), don't have anti viruse, etc.

Everytime this happens I accept sending a report to Apple in hope they will get the info and do something about this problem whcih has been already going on for too long.

It´s sad, but I am not recommending MacBooks to my friends anymore. I have reported this huge problem, I have seen many many more reporting the same and there has been no solution from Apple for a long time. Besides the freezing problem I am experimenting the "run out of application memory" bug from time to time. Bottom line is that my brand new MacBook retina with brand new mavericks works no better than my old MacBook + Mountain Lion, half the memory.

I also have an older Macbook Pro that was working OK previous it was "upgraded" to Mavericks. After the upgrade it was so slow and lacking memory, that I had to put it away and buy the new Retina. Did try to reinstall Mavericks from Scratch a couple of times with no different results.

Right now, not even my kids want to use the older Macbook Pro since its too slow. Did try to go back to the older operating system but it wasn't available for download.

In my new Macbook Pro Retina even that I have a lot of memory and only have Mail and Safari open, the memory usage is huge.

This is an extremely frustrating issue! I have been having this problem constantly since I upgraded to mavericks. I don't have sophos, I don't have 3rd party screen savers, and it happens to me most often when running native apple applications! The only thing that seems to be consistent is a freeze after I wake my computer up from sleep with more than 5 safari tabs open. I am leaning towards a conflict with memory and mavericks use of the memory, but I have no idea how to fix this issue while mavericks is still sucking massive amounts of memory to operate. I am at a loss and ready to go to a PC for design work at this point!

**Just had to wait 10 minutes for my mac to unfreeze just to finish this post...

OK. I suffered this disease as well. I did not have any of the suspicious pieces of software installed so nothing worked until ... I found a message suggesting the use of TSM Adware Removal Tool (http://www.thesafemac.com/art/) This eliminated a couple of files (I lost some prefs but no big deal) that should be installed by some software and my computer has worked flawless for 2 weeks already. Hope it helps.

I too have been experiencing the freezing up problem. No keys work & nothing can be clicked on. Force quit is not accessible. Cursor is still moveable. Only solution is to switch off my computer with it’s keyboard switch.

I am not convinced that this is just a Mavericks problem. Why? Because we are running two Macbook Pro’s (15”) with the identical software. Both with OS X 10.9.4 & the same Safari 7. The freezing problem does not occur on our older late 2007 MBP at all, but has occurred intermittently on my new (1 month old) Retina MBP. Frequency is once or twice per week, with no obvious link to any online activity or web site. Most of the time it works fine.

There is no software referred to as problematic in this & other threads on the computers

I have a gut feeling that it may be Safari related as it has only ever occurred when I have Safari open....... some sort of ‘interaction’ between Safari & something Retina MBP specific?

I have just installed the new Safari 7.0.6 this morning onto the Retina MBP & am keeping my fingers crossed that this has fixed this very Windows like problem.
