can I just take a snapshot of the drive, rather than a complete backup ?

In time machine, can I just take a snapshot of the drive to return to at a needed time.

Rather than use a complete backup.

MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

It makes a complete backup the first time. From then on it is a "snapshot."
