lost photos

Any way to recover lost photos after installing Mavericks without purchsng a recovery application? There is only one iPhoto Librarywjen I Option click iPhoto and that does not have all the photos that were iPhoto before the installation of Mavericks.

I found all the missing photos with a trial revobery application but they want $80 so I can recover them.
