Hi, would I have to phone my carrier to tell them I have sold the phone, thanks
It's not a bad idea to do so, but it's not the most important thing right now.
Log on to iCloud.com using the Apple ID that is active on the iPhone, Go to Find My iPhone > Devices and select to erase the device.
Now found out the phone is asking to connect to iTunes, would they hav to do this before the SIM card started working
The "Connect to iTunes" screen has no effect on the SIM. If they have the correct SIM, they'll be fine. If they don't - well, that's another issue entirely.
Would a windows simcard work on the iPhone 4

windows simcard
There is no such thing.
A SIM card (Subscriber Information Module) is provided by the cellular carrier. It contains the phone number and account information. Any time a phone changes owners or phone number it needs a new SIM card.
Thanks for the replies, if I restored my phone back to its factory settings then not turned off find my iPhone wud this cause the problem of the sim not working. Thanks
Back up. What EXACTLY does the person who purchased the phone say the problem is?
I see several possibilities.
a) you neglected to turn off find my iPhone and remove your iCloud account from the phone before you restored it, resulting in Activation lock requiring your Apple ID and password to continue with activation.
b) The phone is carrier locked and the buyer is attempting to use a carrier other than the one it's locked to.
