How do I put an Iphoto M JPEG video (from my Canon powershot) into a format I can put in Imovie?

This video is 5 years old. I recall there was an intermediate step, putting it into some program that Imovie would recognize, but I've forgotten what this was, and my Applecare expired 2 weeks ago!
