Why does Preview ruin black and white jpg's when you crop them?

OSX 10.9, Just running through doing quick edits of jpgs. When I crop a black and white jpg, and then exit (save) it ruins it. Totally changes the exposure settings - makes it unusable. Works fine for color. Anyone else have this problem?
