How to turn off https by default?

Is there any way in Safari 7 in Mavericks to turn off the default setting of protocol to https? I'm happy to use https whenever I can, but I want to choose to do so -- there are enough sites that I use regularly that DON'T suppport https that I don't want Safari to prefill it if I can avoid it. It's a real pain not to be able just to type a URL into the address bar and get a connection. I just get blank pages, or "cannot connect" messages - shouldn't Safari try a non-secure connection if it's not getting a page back over https?

Thanks, Linc...but I find that if I simply type in a complete URL, without typing http or https in front of it, Safari treats it as an https URL, and fails to connect to a number of sites that I use. I then have to retype the URL with the full "http://" in front of it to make a connection. It's not a big deal, but it annoys me, and I was wondering if there is anyway to flip that behaviour around. It sounds like there isn't.

From the Safari menu bar, select

Safari Preferences Extensions

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.
