Macbook pro and Apple tv used with extra monitor

Can I use an apple tv to connect to a monitor screen and expand my work space from my macbook pro screen? Can this be done wirelessly in a better way? I honestly do not care for all the extras that comes with the Apple tv, but if that is what it takes, I will probably get it. I do not like using the cables to connect to my macbook pro all time as I am constantly on the move in and out of home.

Also, I am not looking to mirroe macbook pro to the monitor, that would almost be a waste to me. It needs to act as an extra screen that i can work on. So, can an Apple tv (or another app/device) solve my problem?
