Ripping Audio from iPhone5 Video that doesn't have sound (?)

Hello All,

I have two questions:

1) this may sound silly, but when recording a video on my iphone 5, do I really need to turn up the volume to capture audio in the video as well? If so, ***!? Why doesn't the iPhone capture audio if my phone is not on mute!??!

2) If I recorded a video while my phone was NOT on mute, is there anyway to retrieve the any sound that was taking place in the video..? I can't seem to hear anything on my iPhone or on my Mac after I uploaded the video.

I should mention, I have some videos where I made sure my ringer volume was highest and recorded someone saying something, but the voice came up hissy, unclear..... so I'm assuming it's my **** iPhone, but I really want to know if there are any programs/any Hollywood/FBI way to rip the audio from this video!

Thanks,

N
