cost-benefit apple tv vs cable

Has anyone done a cost-benefit analysis for Apple TV vs cable. Obviously, this will be different for cable offerings in each locale, which can be smoked out, sometimes with difficulty. On the ATV side, I'd like to know what are the costs for the various offerings.

Thanks

There are too many factors to really do that. How many shows you will actually watch/buy. How many of those shows that you watch on Netflix or Hulu vs buying though iTunes. If you buy the HD or standard options, etc. I definitely pay less for the shows I buy on ATV vs cable but that may not be the case for everyone. And some individual months if a number of shows come out it can be very expensive.

You will probably spend a lot of money at first with it, but it tappers off after you have started to build a library of shows.

Haven't done cost benefit analysis exactly that kind but:

Receive over-air broadcast of about 15 stations (discounting the 10-15 religious stations) in our area: $0

Movies and TV shows on DVD from all the libraries in the state (free in-state interlibrary loan) $0

vs.

Cost of Apple TV hardware + buying shows you probably only really want to watch once in the end (I can see endless re-runs of Gilligan's Island and Hogan's Heroes free on broadcast TV here).

If you're really a must see the newest movie release the day it comes out junkie, or you live out in the boonies then it's maybe worth it.

Brian...

Thanks. As I suspected there are too many moving parts to this question. I'll wait for 4g ATV hoping for two HDTV ports to enable running the cable thru the DVR plus maybe Apple and the cable providers using their creative minds to come up with a one-stop shopping setup whereby one can grab just one remote and do the job. I know Apple and the cable guys are working on deals that work, as shown by the recent additions to the ATV offerings.

For what purpose? DVR's are for live content? You can watch contant on ATV any time you want and can fast forward rewind etc already. Copying it to DVR, if you even can, would just require you wait an hour while the show is copied to the DVR to watch it. Instead of just watching it instantly any time you want.

This is already an opption. Logitech has remotes that will do this. Their setup is pretty involved, but once you have it working it is really nice.

Thanks. What I'm trying to do is unify control of a Bose 321GSX, an ATV and a Time-Warner DVR (Scientific Atlanta). May not be possible after reading the Logitec page, which doesn't list the SA DVR in their compatible hardware. Will however work with the 321/ATV combo to get decent sound. Thanks for your adfvice. Gives me an understanding of what's out there.
