I had this happen as well. Check your phone's settings for iCloud. I had mine synced with iCloud and somehow all my settings for iCloud were back to being off instead of being on.

Like others have said, turn Icloud contacts off and back on and THEN turn off and back on the phone. Fixed the issue. It's got to be a bug fix.
