Quicktime Broadcaster error 5420 - solution

This has been bugging me for a while - basically my G5 would stream using QTB perfectly, but the PowerBook would not. The settings were identical, the version was identical, all preferences and settings were wiped etc etc.

After examining network packet dumps I have realised that the problem is the handling of the RTSP protocol. The handler for this is Quicktime (I have v7 Pro) which causes the problem by trying to connect to the server on the wrong port - in my case port 80 rather than port 554.

To fix:

Open System Preferences
Click Quicktime
Click 'Advanced'
Click on 'Transport Setup' and choose 'Custom...'
...a box will appear - enter into the box:
Transport Protocol: HTTP
Port ID: 'Other' and put 554 in the box
Click OK
Click on Transport Setup again
Put it back to 'Automatic'

Try your stream again - it should work. Hope this is useful.
