Is my logic board/video card dying?

A couple weeks ago, my Macbook Pro (15" 2010 model) started to glitch. One day, it kept freezing and needing to be force restarted, then later got stuck in this restarting cycle. During the restart, I got this...

Then, the next day while backing up my harddrive on to an external harddrive, it froze again. Similar look.

I took it in to an apple certified repair shop, and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They ran diagnostics, checked the video card, and tried repeatedly to get it to crash, and couldn't. I went and picked it up, as it seemed to be just taking up space at their shop.

It's been acting okay for a few days, but now it seems to be acting up again. It isn't frozen this time, but the screen is visably, well. Wrong.

(note that this is a screenshot, not a picture taken of the screen. I didn't even think it would be able to show up via screenshot.)

When some of the icons are hovered on, the name of the program shows up as broken pixels.

Help? Time to take it back to the shop? The guy who worked on it saw the first two pictures I've posted here, and he said he would've thought it was a video card problem, but they couldn't find any video card problems.

Any ideas are more than welcome! Thanks!

Kinda looks like a failing GPU

Almost looks like the last shot is inverted. You could try just for a test CONTROL OPTION COMMAND 8.

When it messes up again take screen shots and put them on a USB stick to show them all is not well. There is some failure, some times these intermittant issues can be difficult to diagnose. Is there a specific thing that you do that allows you to recreate tis issue? Or take it in while it is in failure mode. (if possible)

Good luck

Is there any reason that the diagnostics run showed no problem, then?

I can't answer that. The best answer I can give is hardware diagnostic tests, especially involving the logicboard, often produce false negatives. Even if the place is Apple Certified. It is advised to run at the Apple Hardware Test (at home version of hardware diagnostic tests) 3X back to back, for example, to produce even semi-reliable results. I can tell you that based on your images, your GPU is most definitely failing and the logicboard needs to be replaced.

Also - how would I find a copy of the panic reports?

Open up your "Console" application. Look under "System Diagnostic Reports." If you have any kernel panics, the report will begin with "kernel_" and end in ".panic." Alternatively, the kernel panic log(s) would be located in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

Thanks!

You're welcome. Best of luck.

Also,

(note that this is a screenshot, not a picture taken of the screen. I didn't even think it would be able to show up via screenshot.)

Note that if it hadn't shown up on a screenshot, then the display would be the issue. The fact that it did is a strong indication of the problem being the GPU itself.

These were the three panic reports that came up, doing some reading online now to see if I can make any sense of that, haha.

Dec 12, 2013 6:00 PM in response to bpoese

Can you post a full copy (including the drivers, backtrace if applicable) of the most recent one? This type of panic is generally not indicative of a GPU failure, but rather bad RAM. That being said, as originally mentioned, your GPU is definitely failing based on your screenshots.

ah, that's all that was showing up, but I just reopened console and there's more to it. Not sure what I was doing.

There is nothing more I can tell you based on the report itself, besides the fact that the panic(s) indicate a hardware issue, potentially a bad memory module, which could be completely seperate from the logicboard issue. But your GPU is definitely failing. I would make a genuis bar appointment, and have Apple run the diagnostics test themselves as Apple is the only company who could issue you a free replacement for your logicboard-I am not positive as to whether the replacement program is still applicable. If they hesistate, ask for the store manager-ultimately, it lies in his/her discretion. Best of luck.

Is my logic board/video card dying?
