Q: Aperture 3.4.5 Won't Remember to Open my Camera

Running Aperture 3.4.5 on 10.7.5 and my selection in Aperture preferences > Import>  "When camera is connected open______" I have selected to open Aperture. However the setting isn't remembered and I have to import my photos otherwise. The setting seems to revert to "no application" after I shut down my computer. Is there a way to make this preference stick?

    Poked around, this is really a bit of a mess. It appears that the final word over what will open is controlled by Image Capture and the file you want to look at is

    /Users/YourNAme/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCapture2.1865AC53-E558 -5449-AA97-6602A1AE26B9.plist

    NOTE the numbers in the file name will be different for you. The important thing is the folder, the ByHost subfolder in the Preferences folder and the beginning part of the file name com.apple.ImageCapture2.

    Try dragging that to the desktop WITH BOTH Aperture and Image Capture closed and then try setting it and see if it sticks.

    If it doesn't it could be a permission problem with the ByHost folder. How did you set up thsi Mac? Was it a migration from another  Mac? Were there any issues when you set it up?

    Anyway try the above file and post back.

    regards

    Sigh. No, that didn't do it. I found the pref under ByHost, com.apple.ImageCapture2.000a95d4aa7c Threw it out, Set the Aperture pref, logged out and back in.

    IIRC this mac was set up via Migration whenever it was that I installed 10.7.5. I got this MacPro

    2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon mid 2010, I think in 2012, after my G5 failed. I don't recall how I set it up, but I may have simply swapped HD's from my G5, but since the G5 won't take 10.7.5 I must have downloaded that and updated. Yes, I recall downloading Lion.

    Also, this used to work, it has only been the last month or so that it stopped working.

    This is what the old ImageCapture2 says:

    bplist00“    _  HotPlugActionArray_  HotPlugActionPath° _  /Applications/Aperture.app_  /Applications/iPhoto.app

    "68Up

    and the new one:

    bplist00‘_  LastHotPlugActionPath_  HotPlugActionPath_  HotPlugActionArray_ $00000000-0000-0000-0000-000004A91908_  /Applications/Aperture.app_  /Applications/Aperture.app° _  /Applications/Aperture.app“

    The one I threw out: com.apple.ImageCapture2.000a95d4aa7c.plist has a creation date of 2009.

    The one named com.apple.ImageCapture2.003065bf0a6a.plist and is still in ByHost has a creation date of 2003.

    and com.apple.ImageCapture2.08A3EAD5-4C5C-5C8A-B828-EC9BFE120AD4.plist has a date of today at 8PM.

    Did you try getting rid of the one with today's date?

    I recommend that you download TextWrangler a free text editor that can open plist files and display them in the correct way. You'll at least be able to look inside the plist file and see what application is set

    For example the section of my plist file that shows what is to open looks like

    <dict>

    <key>ICADeviceTypeKey</key>

    <string>ICADeviceTypeCamera</string>

    <key>autolaunchApplicationPath</key>

    <string>/Applications/iPhoto.app</string>

    </dict>

    So you can see clearly that the iPhoto is set to open when a camera is connected. And while it won't fix the problem it would be helpful to see the exact entry in the plist file.

    No, I believe that one was created after I threw out the one I thought was the right one.

    I'm downloading TextWrangler now.

    Should I throw them all out, the two that say ImageCapture2.....plist?

    No, wait till you have TextWrangler running and you look at the plist file with the latest date.

    Once you have it running  open the plist file and copy and paste the whole file here. It isn't very long mine is 37 lines.

    That is the latest plist file? It says Image Capture is opened when a camera is connected.

    Now with a camera attached and Image Capture opened set the application to open to Aperture. You should see that change in the plsit file, in the autolaunchApplicationPath section.

    Power off the camera or disconnect it from the system, close Image Capture, power on or reconnect the camera Aperture should  open.

    Now assuming the above worked, reboot the system and try the camera again. If Aperture does not open look at the plist file with TextWrangler again and post it here.

    I might not get back to this tonight, I'll check back in with this in the AM.

    good luck

    Ok, I connected the camera and Aperture opened because the setting hasn't yet been erased by a reboot. I see my camera under devices, altho my scanner now seems to be missing.

    Quitting aperture.

    In ImageCapture the setting is to open Aperture when the camera is connected.

    Setting Image Capture also to import into Aperture.

    Quitting ImageCapture.

    Ejecting my Camera.

    Start up Camera, Aperture opens as it should. Eject Camera.

    Rebooting, not just a log out.

    Rebooted, going directly to the plist.

    Going to ByHost>ImageCapture2 with the latest date. Here is what it says in TextWrangler.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

    </dict>

    </plist>

    Connecting Camera, Aperture does not open. Opening Aperture and the pref is set to "no application".

    Going back to TextWrangler to copy the plist. Here it is:

    I've gone back into ImageCapture, connected the camera and played with the settings. I see that TextWrangler now shows two <key> sections. With the first one autolaunching ImageCapture and the second one autolaunching Aperture. This is apparently the condition the plist is in when it works. Now, keep in mind that I really have no idea what I'm talking about, I don't know what a key is or a dict or an array. Anyway, have a good evening, I'm off too.

    is what is telling the system what to open when a camera is connected.

    The entry above that is for when a scanner is attached, not really sure what the entry below it is for.

    So do you have anything running when you log in that might be changing this? Any camera or image applications that you installed?

    Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - In the meantime try a safe boot. Press the shift key as soon as the start up chimes sounds and hold it until the Apple logo appears. Safe boot takes longer to come up, there will be a progress bar at the bottom of the screen and when the system is up a the log in screen there will be the word Safe Mode in red at the top of the screen.  Once the system is up this way just reboot normally no need to log in. Then try it again.

    To findout if something is interfering with your settings, like Frank Caggiano suspects, it will help to have an inventory of your third-party system add-ons. If Safe-Mode did not solve the problem, download EtreCheck:  http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    This is very useful little program, written by one of our fellow posters here, that will list all non-standard kernel extensions and launch daemons.

    Just run it and copy the list to the paste board and paste it into your next post.

    Safe Mode; when I try to open Aperture it reports that my installed graphics card does not support this version of Aperture.

    I'm back after a normal reboot and as usual the Aperture pref has reverted. When I checked this morning after my machined normal start up TextWrangler shows the same but the pref is set to "no application".

    I've underlined the items that EtreCheck had in red. My Time Machine disk wouldn't work today and Disk Utility reported a lot of problems but said it was repaired, still I couldn't use TimeMachine so I erased it and am starting over with that disk. The errors were node structure, Invalid sibling link, Incorrect number of extended attributes,  Incorrect number of Access Control Lists, Invalid volume file count free block count.  The reported problem from TimeMachine was that there wasn't enough space.
