Q: Aperture 3.4.5 Won't Remember to Open my Camera

Running Aperture 3.4.5 on 10.7.5 and my selection in Aperture preferences > Import>  "When camera is connected open______" I have selected to open Aperture. However the setting isn't remembered and I have to import my photos otherwise. The setting seems to revert to "no application" after I shut down my computer. Is there a way to make this preference stick?

    I updated the Java Plugin, threw out the Arcana startupsound and the cookiestumbleragentplist.

    Have you updateted to AudioHijackBeta? The Rogue Amoeba page lists AudioHijack as not yet fully compatible with Mavericks:  http://rogueamoeba.com/status/

    i.e. the    com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn component or com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore .

    I don't see, however, how this audio software could be interfering, more likely candidates are AppCleaner and AppTrap, since they are directly dealing with preference files.

    I have to think a bit about it.

    What are you using SIMBL for? I unstalled my SIMBL plugin, because it was giving me trouble again and again after the updates to Mt. Lion and Mavericks.  A pity, since it was needed for the Colorful Sidebar.

    This in the plist file is actually correct

      <key>00000000-0000-0000-0000-00452D353130</key>

              <dict>

                        <key>ICADeviceTypeKey</key>

                        <string>ICADeviceTypeCamera</string>

                        <key>autolaunchApplicationPath</key>

                        <string>/Applications/Aperture.app</string>

              </dict>

    It says that when a camera is attached, ICADeviceTypeCamera, open,  autolaunchApplicationPath, Aperture, /Applications/Aperture.app

    And this is from the latest plist file? And I guess you tried a camera to see if Aperture opened?

    Nothing in the output of EtreChecks list of start up items  jumps out but I'm not familiar with a  number of your startup items.

    Two things however icom.freemacsoft.appcleanerd.plist always get suspicious when I see OS X 3rd party app cleaners installed on machines having weird problems. It would be a good idea to get rid of this no matter what. Not needed on a Mac and can cause problems.

    And Cookie Stumbler shoudl go also.

    Try the above and see what happens. Sorry I don;t have anything more definitive this AM, running out of ideas to be honest.

    regards

    No I haven't updated Audio Hijack and deleted SIMBL a long while ago because I was suspecting it was causing problems. I am still running Lion on my main drive but I have installed Mavericks on a seperate drive just to see how it works. It did not play well with my CAD program (Ashlar Xenon, display problems) so I've left it alone until I'm sure it runs my critical software. I may boot into that drive to play with it again after they update it.

    I should probably, at least, get rid of either AppCleaner orAppTrap, but AppTrap is turned off.

    I will uninstall AppCleaner. CookieStumbler is already thrown out. AppTrap is turned off.

    Currently Aperture's pref is set correctly, and it works , but the problem has always been with what happens after a reboot.  Image Capture shows the correct setting. I will logout and try again.

    Nope, I connect a camera and Aperture does not open, the setting has reverted once again to "no application" The relevant part inTextWrangler reports:

    <key>00000000-0000-0000-0000-00452D353130</key>

              <dict>

                        <key>ICADeviceTypeKey</key>

                        <string>ICADeviceTypeCamera</string>

                        <key>autolaunchApplicationPath</key>

                        <string></string>

              </dict>

              <key>HotPlugActionArray</key>

              <array>

                        <string>/Applications/Aperture.app</string>

              </array>

              <key>HotPlugActionPath</key>

              <string></string>

              <key>LastHotPlugActionPath</key>

              <string></string>

    </dict>

    </plist>

    So, I go to Aperture prefs, set camera to open Aperture and TextWrangler reports:

    <key>00000000-0000-0000-0000-00452D353130</key>

    What did you do before the plist reverted? Log off or restart the system?

    And what have you uninstalled by now?

    AppCleaner Helper,      AppTrap?

    Is the  com.freemacsoft.appcleanerd.plist  gone, and also  AppCleaner Helper, when you run EtreCheck again?

    I logged off.... I think. The plist reverts when I reboot or log off. I can run Aperture after my pref selection and it does as it should, I can quit and then run Aperture again and everything is fine. It appears to only revert to "no application" only when I shut down, log off, or reboot.

    I uninstalled AppCleaner and com.freemacsoft.appcleanerd.plist is thrown out.

    AppTrap is still there in my System Prefs, but it is turned off and has been for ages.

    It's all beyond my knowledge, but I cannot understand what process logging off initates that kills my preference. Could it be a virus. I did run Virus Barrier Plus scan about a week ago, it found nothing but I'll run it with the 12/10/13 definitions now.

    When I run EtreCheck I get this:

    And... now I got the AppCleaner via my system prefs Users and Groups, LoginItems.

    On edit, I found a com.freemacsoft.applecleanerd in library>PriveledgedHelperTools and threw that out too.

    Sorry it's been a while since I was able to get back to this.

    Unfortunately I'm at a loss at this point.  I don't have a 10.7 system to really test on and there have been changes in the way the preferences are done since then.

    As this seems to be directly related to something in your user settings you could make a new user for yourself and migrate your data over to it, this can get complicated and here is always the chance that you'll run into permission problems in the end.

    The other troubleshooting option, which sounds extreme but is really not to bad to do, is to move all of your Library/Preferences  to your desktop and see if the problem clears. It should as the new user did not have the problem.  Moving all the Preferences out will make you account seem like the system was just installed.

    Now at this point if the problem is fixed some users will just leave it as it is and recreate their preferences as they use applications and run the system. This works OK if you have nothing to complicated setup.

    The other option at this point is to try and track down just what in the Preferences is causing the problem by a process of elimination.

    Put back half the Preference items and see what happens. If the problem does not occur move those out again and move in the second half of the items. Hopefully the problem will occur. Now move half of those and see. If all goes well you can narrow it down to the file or files causing the problem.

    Sorry I don;t have more

    post back if you need help or more info with either of the above procedures.

    regards

    No apologies, Frank. This is all free help and I appreciate it a lot.

    I think I'm going to have to just live with it because it is, after all, a minor annoyance and I don't want to take the time to reset all my preferences, there are so many. If I make a new user I think the chances are that I'd just migrate the problem back over to the new user.

    I've run PreferentialTreatment and it reports all preferences are good. Your solution reminds me of the old ConflictCathcer utility that I used in System 8. If I create a new user do I just use Migration to move all my apps over to the new account?

    Do you think it's worth reinstalling Aperture?

    Reinstalling Aperture, in my opinion, is unlikely to fix this problem as it seems centered on your account and a reinstall of the app will only redo the common files, but hey at this point who's to say. it's quick and easy to do so why not.

    I agree making a new account yourself and migrating to it is not simple and can cause problems in itself. I suggested it because if you were to contact  Apple with this problem that is most likely the approach they would recommend, but I don't like dealing with issues like this that way.

    I really think that, when you have some free time,  moving the preferences out and moving them back in in stages is the way to go. It really won't take long and you will retain all your current preferences except of course for the one(s) causing the problem.

    good luck ad if you have more questions post back

    regards

    Ok, I'm going to think about this, Frank. When I remove preferences should I keep the Aperture preferences in ByHost and preferences?  And also, do I need to do a restart after I remove each section of preferences, go to Aperture set the camera pref and restart again to see if it sticks?
