"can't find server" no internet was trying to add printer. ibook g3 on 10.4 plse HELP

Hi.plse help. I've tried so many things. Ok I was trying to add printer but had problems as it works with 10.5 & I have 10.4. This was weeks ago & I can't remember what I changed. It was sharing or firewall or security. I have tried to reset safari & cleared cookies caches. I tried new user. I have tried with firewall on off same with sharing.

Can any1 give me checklist or any advice.

So desperate.

Not sure which of those items you mention would be responsible for where you ended up with this...

If you knew what the default settings were for the preference panels, that would be a way to put whatever you did back to their original place. There are network printers and there are printers, since you could share a printer in a local network and probably over a distance, too; even if you don't want to, it is possible.

Sometimes, with a printer, the driver software has minimum requirements for the computer hardware it was intended to work with, and if it could not be used in a system older than Tiger OS X 10.4.11, then it won't. There had been a site (no longer seem to have the link or url to it) where other drivers were available for free that may work when the factory drivers don't.

Most sources for additional drivers require a working internet access and some knowledge of what it is you are looking for exactly; model number, brand of printer, and so on. Sometimes the factory web site may have drivers for other systems, for a specific model printer.

Since I no longer have a computer that runs Tiger 10.4.11, though do have software installers on DVD, I wonder if you have the installer discs for the software in your computer. When you bought it on ebay, were discs included? An installer disc could be used as an almost last-resort, if available & used carefully.

Troubleshooting the symptoms of why you got the 'can't find server' when just trying to install a printer, is not really easy without being able to look into the various preferences or settings. Maybe if someone else sees this who has recent experience in that older OS, they may have ideas that may work.

There may be some helpful information in the computer's installed Help. In some models, that may try to go online; but for an older OS that may not be so helpful should it bring up only newer reference to a recent OSX.

Maybe you should look into posting a new revised question, reworded for clarity too, in the Tiger OS X system discussions area. That could expose this issue to a different audience, not limited to the iBook.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
