That doesn't help... I have it on and I still get pop ups constantly. It's starting to make using my iPhone or iPad to do read anything,on the web a horrible experience. Apple really needs to fix Safari.

Pop ups asking me to try some stupid game called "Jelly Splash" from ib.adnxs.com. I have to click the tiny little box which half the time forces me to their website. It's getting ridiculous.

Why has Apple done such a poor job with Safari on iOS7 ?

Thomas and Johnathan

I know you're both SHOCKED that someone is experiencing problems with an Apple product, but they really do exist.

Now to straighten you both out. I am 60 years old and use my phone principally for business and personal use with my immediate family. I occasionally take business trips and might read news sites while sitting at an airport, but that's rare now since I use my iPad now. I do NOT have any goofy games on either device and might have 3 or 4 other apps..... I'm your classic old fart when it comes to smart phones.

Yes it might be the news articles I read from a wide and varied sources, but I see none of this on Windows based machines. Simply because of Apple's having to be such control freaks. YES back a few years ago I thought Apple made sure junk like this wouldn't happen, but over the past few years Safari has become a nightmare to use.

This morning on my iPad I received a pop-up from ad.yahoo.com. I do not have a Yahoo account not a Google Account, and I certainly don't have a Facebook or Twitter account. So you tell me what I'm doing wrong?

The problem is that Safari's/iOS7 idea of Pop-up Blocking is not working. Irrespective of who's doing it, Safari is allowing my screen to be blocked by spam ads and crap I didn't sign up for. And Apple simply plays dumb about it. They simply lecture you to unload all your apps then re-install them... classic circle jerk! And ad to that iTunes, which is one of the worst software programs ever, is another useless tool for doing such maintenance. Are you telling me that Apple can't find what offending website, cookie, or app is sending these pop-ups? Please? My faith in Apple has been diminished immensely in the past year. After having an 4 iPhones over the past 6 years, this may be my last since using the Internet on either device is so cluttered with ads along with the constant refreshing and shifting of the screen it's only good for watching Netflicks in bed.

I wasn't aware that asking a question to clarify what you're seeing meant that I required "straightening out."

No pop-up blocker is perfect. An overzealous pop-up blocker can break functionality on a legit site. A pop-up blocker that isn't overzealous allows some ads through. It's a no-win situation, especially for people who get so worked up about it.

Plus, many sites these days are using pop-ups that aren't really pop-ups... they're just normal HTML elements displayed on top of the other content. Not much any browser can do about that, other than disabling JavaScript and breaking its display of just about every page on the internet.

You're visiting sites that are driven by ad revenue. You should not be surprised to get ads as a result. If you don't like the pop-ups you're getting from those sites, you should consider using a news source that doesn't use the questionable and annoying technique of displaying pop-ups.

Dec 24, 2013 3:28 AM in response to BobM54

You seriously need to educate yourself about how the Internet works. And I thought it was only the younger generation that expected everything for free these days.

Apple does not control the content on any of the websites you visit using their browser (unless you visit Apple's own websites).

Millions of websites show adverts when you visit them. This is how they pay to provide the website content to you for free. If you don't want to see adverts, don't visit websites that depend on advertising to operate. You don't need to have a Yahoo account to be shown an advert from Yahoo. Just as you don't need to own a Toyota to see an advert from Toyota on your TV.

It is not possible to block every ad or popup. Advertisers are always working out ways to circumvent popup blockers. Showing adverts is how they make their money and allow you to get your news and articles for free.

This is NOTHING to do with Apple. Switch to another phone maker and you'll get just as many ads if not more. The Android operating system is made by Google - the biggest online advertiser on the planet.

This what I love about Apple Fanbois... you are just so defensive.

"You're visiting sites that are driven by ad revenue. You should not be surprised to get ads as a result."

I don't mind ADS that are placed both on the sides of websites or even between paragraphs. THAT'S NOT a Pop-up.

Try being less emotional and READ what I wrote. These are Ads that block a good part of the screen and have nothing to do with the website I'm visiting.... read up on ib.adnxs.com before acting like you know anything.

But I do always enjoy shrill little Apple boys blaming the person and NOT Apple. So save your childish lecture about the websites I visit.... that's not the problem. There's only;y one thing more annoying then dealing with an Apple Genius... and that's coming hear to listen to an Apple genius wannabe!

WOW.... "You seriously need to educate yourself about how the Internet works."

Really... again another Apple genius here telling me to educate myself. I've been using computer and writing code in the real world before you were born. But I appreciate your smug reply... proves my point perfectly.

I can use the Firefox app and I don't get these pop-ups from ib.adnxs.com or ad.yahoo.com. I don't understand why you Apple geniuses who aren't experiencing this problem seem to always attack the person asking these questions. You can't come here unless you bow down to the Apple Gods. Try making helpful comments instead of being so transparently loyal.

And yes I will be seariously thinking about switching to new hardware since the "shine" is off the Apple. RIP Steve Jobs.... your empire is in decline and is being facilitated by the clownbs you left behind.

Geez, try reading what Thomas wrote, in particular:

"Plus, many sites these days are using pop-ups that aren't really pop-ups... they're just normal HTML elements displayed on top of the other content. Not much any browser can do about that, other than disabling JavaScript and breaking its display of just about every page on the internet."

The web browser does not control the position adverts are placed within third-party web pages, or the programming used to display such ads. As far as the browser is concerned it is just HTML content which it displays as instructed by the web page developer.

Thomas clearly knows far more about how adverts are placed on web pages than you do. Please educate yourself before making yourself look even more silly, and get it through your head: The web browser (no matter which one) does not control the content of third-party sites.

snozdop... get out of your "onesie" and put down the hot coco.... Let's go back to start here.

I'm complaining that Safari and Apple can't BLOCK pop-ups like FireFox and IE can on PC. All the websites I visit here on my workstation DO NOT have this issue. But using the same bookmarks imported into Safari, these ads get through...How Freak'n simple do I have to make it. Apple does NOT do a good job of blocking pop-ads... it's that simple!

I fully understand how ads are driven by the websites, but a POP-UP blocker needs to work and that's SAFARI's job!

Get it?

Dec 24, 2013 4:08 AM in response to BobM54

You know how old I am do you? And correcting your total misunderstandings is being 'loyal' is it? I couldn't care less what you think of Apple. But you should at least blame the correct people for the ads you're seeing.

Firefox does not block adverts by default either - just the same as Safari, and Chrome and Explorer.

No doubt you have installed a third-party ad blocker extension on your computer. Firefox is a DESKTOP browser, not a more limited MOBILE browser. For security and performance reasons mobile Safari does not allow the installation of third-party browser extensions. Mobile browsers do not have the same functionality as desktop browsers.

If you want to whinge like a child (at your age! Ha ha!) about too many adverts on websites, do so to the makers of those websites.

You wouldn't whinge about too many holes in the road to the manufacturer of your car, would you?

Dec 24, 2013 4:15 AM in response to dU2mDUifydkRa0E9ic5A

Hey who make's the Pop-up blocker in iOS 7? Who promotes it as BLOCKING Pop-up Ads ? It doesn't matter what IE or Firefox addons I use... they're available and work. Apple on the other hand doesn't allow 3rd party Ad Blockers, yet claims they do, so it falls on them.

You call it whinging, but the truth is I'm right Apple IOS7 pop-up and ad blocker doesn't work... probably like most here on this forum.

Have you signed up for Obamacare yet or you still on mom's policy?

Dear BobM54,

Perhaps senility is setting in, perhaps you are used to projecting your emotions on people in real life, or perhaps mobile technology frightens you. But since you seem to be struggling on many fronts (interpersonal and technological most notably) and it is the holiday season, I'm going to come down to your level and offer some help.

1) You can't expect help on the Internet and be a belligerent, old cooter at the same time. Although your friends and family may tolerate your abrasive social style, the Internet will typically ignore you as a result and you'll end up babbling nonsensically to yourself.

2) By your own definition, you're an Apple Fanboi too. You're defensive, you are posting on the Apple forums, you own an iPhone and you are - by far - the most emotional poster in this thread. Welcome to the club, I guess.

3) Pop-up ads, banner ads, and embedded ads are part of the browsing experience. It's been that was since about 1997. Although you cannot install addons to Safari on the iOS, you do have several options for dealing with these ads:

a) Install the AdBlock Browser and upgrade to Pro (Costs $3.99)

b) Use the "Reader" option in Safari when possible.

c) Ensure "Block Popups" is enabled in your settings.

d) Don't visit sites that abuse their ad display on mobile

e) Get Instapaper

4) Try treating people with respect and you too may find people will begin to respect you.

5) Walking into an unfamiliar territory while spouting insults at the denizens has never been a successful strategy. At 60 years old you should know that.

6) The next time your computer or phone confuses you, take a nap before posting your question on the Internet.

Merry Christmas
