2011 vs 2012 Macbook Pro

Hi I am looking to buy a refurbished Macbook Pro. I'm in college and do graphic design work, photography and some video work. I also need a computer that can run The Sims 3. I'm trying to decide to either buy the 2011 version or a 2012 version. The 2011 macbook available specs:

15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit Hi-Res antiglare widescreen display, 1680-by-1050 resolution

4GB (2 x 2GB) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
750GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm
8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Intel HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6770M

I'm concerned whether there are significant performance difference between the 2011 and 2012 versions. Especially with the graphics card.

I could wait until they are available but I don't know if I should

There still are no 2012 15" anti-glare refurbs available.

The 2011 is still available.

Given that the 2011, a year older, is still available, one might surmise that 2012s might be available in the coming year. That's a "might be." I keep an eye on the refurbs and can tell you that any year's anti-glares are not always available, so that's something to consider too.

As I've told many people, try to buy when you need it, and try to buy as new as possible as that's likely to last you that much longer, but you're in a unique situation. It's almost a roll of the dice whether a 2012 will come up and/or the 2011s will still be there. And given that Apple is currently not making any anti-glares, if you wait too long you could be left with no options but a used one, and I'd recommend against that, unless it has at least one year of AppleCare left on it, and even then, you could be buying someone else's problems.

No one can tell you what to do, only what they'd do, so you're going to have to make up your own mind.

Good luck! 😉

There have been 2012 antiglare refurbs put up, one was a couple days ago actually. But they always get taken before I can get them.

To me, that's a decision. You want a 2012, you just get indecisive when they're available. With your mind made up, it's just a matter of another one coming up and you clicking a few buttons and your search is over. If I were you that's what I'd do; wait it out another month or so, and if they've been coming up as recently as a few days ago, then they're likely to come up again and you can be all ready to go for it. 😉
