How do I figure out what my password is to install new software. Does not accept my apple password which is the only one I have on this new MacBook Air?

I have had this issue several times. The installation password is the password you use to open your computer. It may or may not be the same as your Apple ID password depending what you have chosen.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you set up a Mac, it lets you choose which password you want to use, and it is not your Apple ID password.
First of all, try resetting the user account password with your Apple ID > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
If it does not work, you need to reset the password through OS X Recovery > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101
