Q: how do I delete the previously opened apps that appear at the bottom of the screen when I dbl click the home button

Slide the app preview window to the top so it dissapears.

Fairly easy, all you have to do is double tap the home button to enter background view ant then swipe up on the screenshot of the running application you want to close out. It will fly off the screen. For more info see Apple Support page HT4211 related to understanding multitasking in iOS.

iOS 7 How to Close Apps

Double Tap the Home Button... Then swipe the App (not the icon) Upwards... Tap the Home Button when finished.
