Spotlight Hanging - MDSWorker Thread Exceptions

Hi,

I upgraded from Snow Leapord to Mavericks, and it is running very slowly. I noticed that Spotlight starts indexing and never finishes, it seems to stay stuck on 2 hours remaining. I have tried a few things, killing the Spotfire service, deleting the Spotfire-V100 directlry and restarting, and it happens every time.

I have excluded external USB drives from Spotfire, and have checked the integrity of the disk.

When I view the console logs I get loads of this kind of message.

Hi,

Thanks all. Sorry it took so long to get back, lot to work through here, and also I have to leave Spotlight overnight to see if the issue is resolved...I uninstalled all the things suggested (Parallels was in the Incompatible Software folder, but the uninstaller seemed to work), McAfee off, scripts run.

Still Spotlight is stuck on 2 hours remaining....

Getting close to just formatting and doing a reinstall of Mavericks from scratch, but bit reluctant to do so.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

Hi,

Tried all suggestions on here now, unistall XCode and all other elements suggested, reset all the ACLs, including from recovery mode, deleted the index Spotlight V100 folder etc....reinstalled Mavericks from Recovery mode.

Same thing, seems to alternate between 12 hours remaining and 2 hours remaining etc, never consistent, but never progresses once it gets stuck. All used to work wonderfully before Mavericks.

I have also added all my external drives to be excluded from Spotlight in System Preferences, but this looks like there is still something being indexed on an external time machine drive

I have a similar problem Linc. On my PowerMac (10.6.8, 2xquadcore). I have tried all the usual things like deleting the .Spotlight-V100 directories, rebooting from an external drive and running disc utility, fixing file permissions, reinstalling the 10.6.8 combi upgrade but to no effect. mds just ends up hogging CPU cycles and keeps crashing (sementaion fault), which says to me it is running out of memory(?). PS I use Firefox (not Safari so much). Could the problem be some file on my HD that mds cannot index (no importer)? If this is possible, how would I find the offending file? Or is it some system extension causing the problem? This machine is used mainly for quantum mechanical calculations so I need to go as fast as possible so am currently forced to have mds and timemachine turned off.

Woudl really appreciate some help with this problem so anything else you need me to run, just ask

If all the facts are as you've stated, including the fact that you reproduced the problem while running in safe mode, then I suggest a clean reinstallation.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

When you reboot, the Setup Assistant will launch to take you through the initial setup process. Follow the prompt to transfer the data from one of your backups. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

Hi,

I reinstalled from scratch and then restored my data and applications from Time Machine (was worried about this as thought restoring my data and apps would restore the problem files). It "seems" to be OK now, i.e. Spotlight doesnt appear to be indexing or estimating index time remaining any more.

Is there any way to check the status of the index, i.e. to see if I am just lucky at the moment as the index hasn't started to be built after a reinstall??

I am hoping this is it...have to say, pretty impressed with Time Machine...was dreading having to reinstall all my srivers and apps, but no need to!!
