My current os x is 10.8.5 and I juts bought a printer which requires 10.4.11 - 10.6.x... does this means i have to downgrade?
Please help with what I need to do.

Not necessarily. If the printer is fairly new, it will most likely still be supported on the newer versions of OS. Check the manufacturers web site for updated drivers.
It just means your printer was made before 10.7 came out.
Nothing to worry about. You can get updated drivers online if needed.
