cannot insert CD in Imac G3 slot load

I bought an Imac G3 350mhz slot load computer from ebay. It seems to work fine except for the fact I cannot insert a CD. I want to load software, but cannot. Should I just purchase an external CD rom or is there a way to fix this?

I know this may be difficult to describe, but can you try to tell us what exactly happens when you try to insert the disk. Does it feel like it is hitting something? If so, how far in before it hits it? Is there any noise when you attempt to insert the disk?

I am going out on a limb here since I have very little to go on, but I have a suspicion that someone put a mini cd in there and got it stuck.

IF this is the case, the bad news is that it is probably not worth fixing the drive. The more bad news is that I don't think that machine has firewire (and I know it doesn't have usb2) so adding an external cd drive will also be difficult.
You may have to consider that the only wat to load software will be via a network connection or by temporarily removing the HD and doing the install on another machine.

ihacker,

First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums!

As the previous poster asks, you will need to post back with further info.

*Is the software that you are trying to load an OS upgrade or third party software? Is the software compatible with the OS installed and the system hardware of the computer?

*If you are sure that there is no disk stuck in the drive, what happens when you try inserting the cd in question? Will it not go into the drive or is it just spit back out immediately? Have you tried inserting another cd in the drive to make sure the disk is not defective?

Without further info, we can only guess at what the problem might be.

If the cd rom is faulty just get a new one or better upgrade to a cdburner or dvd , do a google search or go to http://www.wegenermedia.com/imaccd.htm and they are prety resonable. While your in there you might want to upgrade to ram ( www.ramseeker.com ) and maybe even upgrade the hard drive. The HD will set you back about 40+ and the ram 20+ the cd burn er will be the most expencive but well worth it.
