Telestrate in FCP

fcp is a heavyweight video editing and lightweight compositing tool ... but its not designed to record (or animate) freehand drawing on the screen image.

you'd be better off animating the pen strokes in after effects with their built-in stroke plug-in or something like Trapcode's 3D stroke plug-in

appologies if i've misunderstood your meaning, but telestrate is not a verb in common usage round here!

There is special software and hardware available for this (suggestions, anyone?) but if you don't have access to it you'll have to get creative. After Effects has a feature for animated painting that could be overlayed on a video clip once you nailed down the timing. Depending on how simple your telestration will be, you could also pull frame grabs from your video into Photoshop, make all your lines and shapes on a higher layer, then superimpose that layer over your video in FCP, and use Mask filters to reveal the drawings in an animated fashion. I'll refrain from going totally insane and suggesting you pull a matte from footage of a white-gloved hand holding a black marker painted white, drawing on a thick sheet of white paper taped to a TV screen, through which your video is barely visible...

you're wanting a product like you see on tv from a sporting event perhaps. those "telestrators" are either a "codi" made by chyron or a fingerworks product.

no such animal in fcp. the other posters have given good advice. you can use vector paint in after effects and i think motion may have something similar.

but no, you're not gonna get what you want in fcp.

wait, i think stibb's filters has kind of a line drawing type plug in that's free. is it stibb's? google stibb's.
