You've managed to hit the two biggest offenders on this topic, but third-party download sites should be avoided in general. Software should only be downloaded from the developer's website, and nowhere else.
I agree with your edit remarks especially as it also resulted in the removal of your subsequent post above.
As a matter of interest I did what I could to check the cnet download content and could not see any adware installer in this particular download but I accept that in view of their recent history we should never point inexperienced users to the site.
It is a shame that all our historic Version-Tracker and Mac-Fix-It links point to cnet - what would Ted Laundau say?
Most other resources such as Pure Mac point to the non-existent author's site. I suspect it will survive in some of the FTP archives for a few years.
I have no plans to upgrade my Apple hardware beyond Tiger and Leopard so am quite happy with the existing iStat Pro.
