Dictation not working - makes sound but no microphone appears.

Dictation is turned on in system preferences. It works immediately after restarting the computer, but after I dictate into email, then move to another app, it doesn't work agin.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9)
