all 5000 of my photos deleted off my computer! how can i get them back?

Iv had my imac for over a year and used it to upload pictures from my iphone to the computer. i accumulated 5000 pictures onto my iphoto and then i tried to upload my new ipad to the computer and it deleted all 5000 of mt fictures from my iphoto and i cant seem to get them back!
