Possible issue after installing New HDD into my Late 2009 iMac intel

I installed a replacement HDD into my iMac late 2009 model 2308 i installed same one that it came with with Apple fireware and everything once i boot up my comouter and try to boot from USB drive i dont see the HDD i installed only see the USB flash drive with the OSX (lion i believe). Once i click on the USB drive to boot from it, it goes into the Apple logo trying to log on afnd then has the no access sign i was wondering if maybe i should get a Snow leopard cd to boot it rom or i installed the HDD wrong in which case i dont believe...Neew help asap please and thank you
