I'm having this problem after updating to iOS 7 where all my images have a question mark instead of the image preview. I can't seem to open the images either. Anyone have an idea on how to gain access to these photos?

What user troubleshooting have you tried? The steps are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. If the problem isn't corrected after these steps, the final step is to make an appointment at the Genius Bar at Apple to have the hardware checked.
I closed the app and restarted the phone. Will try a restore from backup later, but I just wanted to get an idea on anyone experiencing this issue.
Don't want to restore as new as that will just end up removing all my messages...
Looking at your screen shot again, these appear to be old messages. Did you try restoring to your backup again? It is possible the backup that you are using to restore the phone is slightly damaged and that is causing this issue, since messages are stored in the iPhone backup. I'm am guessing that you did perform a backup of the device before you updated.
I did, but the update to iOS 7 happened a couple of weeks ago and I just started noticing this issue, so I don't think there's a backup old enough (i.e. pre-iOS 7) that could contain potentially uncorrupt images.
If you backed up the device before you updated firmware, there should be a date/time stamped backup in iTunes. Go to iTunes and check to see what backups exist for your device.
Actually, it looks like everything prior to iOS 7 has that icon on it. Everything after the iOS 7 update looks to be there.
It's only being backed up to iCloud.
Sorry, then iCloud only holds the last 3 backups, unlike iTunes.
