Is there external storage for ipads that would work for recording and mixing music?

I am new to this forum. With all the new capabilities for recording and producing music on new ipads I just question if the internal storage is enough for recording and mixing full songs/multiple tracks/songs with plugins, effects, etc.. So this brings up the question are there external drives that would work with recording apps like garage band and auria that you could write directly to the drive instead of taking up large amounts of internal storage. Thank you for any help or advice.
