IOS 7 Multiple email accounts / can't send?

I'm trying to help out a friend who like me has an iPhone 4s; he has two email accounts configured on his phone; one is his gmail account and the other is a pop3 / smtp work email account i.e. myname@mybusiness.com. When he was using IOS 6.x he had no problem replying to emails from either account but since his upgrade to IOS 7 he can receive email on both accounts and reply to emails from his gmail account but he cannot reply to emails on his personal business email. The error message he gets is something like "This server is not configured as a relay" and the message never goes out.

I've checked his settings and they haven't changed since the account was originally setup and the only thing I can think of here is that when he sends an email from his business pop account the phone is trying to send it through the gmail server and of course the gmail server is not setup to relay mail from other domains.

Is this a known problem? Is there a fix or workaround? If it is a bug or known problem is Apple woring on a fix?

I'm sorry to say that deleting and recreating the mail account didn't work and if anything the problem is now worse; at least before he could receive mail but now he can't send or receive.

The problem is that a message "The mail server is not responding" keeps popping up when trying to send or receive mail. I had a particularly hard time setting up the email account as several times even though imap was turned off I kept getting the message "The imap server is not responding".

I've gone over the advanced incoming and outgoing mail server settings and everything is identical to the settings he has setup in Outlook (and Outlook works without a problem).

The mail server that his business uses is ancient and in fact is scheduled to be taken out of service in the next year as Verizon is getting out of the domain mail hosting business and pushing all the old customers to Google Docs and that migration is a disaster and has repeatedly failed. So I'm trying to get them to go to a different hosting provider for mail like Rackspace that has imap compatible mail servers.

I have an almost identical problem. Main account is an office Exchange server. Private is "user@mydomain.co.uk". I can receive emails happily on both, but when replying to emails on the private email I ger the "The connection to the outgoing server "mail.myisp.net" failed".

I have deleted and reinstalled the second account [twice] and have endlessly checked the server, username and password are correct. Local iStore had alook but could not see any answer.

Changing the From: address to my Exchange account gets the emails sent, but it means replies then come through my office address!

I've been working on this some more, as I had indicated in my original post his comany's mail server was on an ancient Verizon domain mail server (not their regular verizon.net servers but some old servers they inherited from GTE, POP & SMTP only) which is a service they've been trying to phase out for two years and migrate their existing customer to Google Docs. Needless to say the migration was a disaster and after three 2 hour phone calls failed to resolve getting the migration done I gave up. I've got them migrated to Rackspace email.

I again deleted and recreated his work email on his iPhone 4s and I spent an hour checking and changing and trying different settings. Several times I got the message "iMap server not responding", while the rackspace server is iMap capable I had the settings set to pop and smtp so I'm still unsure why I got that and why after a number of settings changes that had nothing to do with imap the message stopped popping up. The problem that I'm now having is that all settings appear to be correct but I keep getting the message "Cannot get mail the mail server pop.xxx.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in mail settings". I've gone over the settings more times than I can count and I've re-entered the username and password at least a half dozen times and I keep getting the same error.

Just FYI, I'm using settings that work fine in Outlook 2007 without any problems and it's only his phone that has a problem.

Idea's anyone?
