Just got my wife a new iPad Air for Christmas and set it up through iTunes from the complete backup of her previous iPad...I thought Numbers, Keynote, GBand, iMovie etc were supposed to be included on the new iPad...where are they?

They need to be downloaded from the App Store as they are not pre-installed. Follow the procedure below to get them.
New devices activated after Sep 1, 2013 and running iOS 7 or later will qualify for the free iWork suite (Pages, Keynote, & Numbers). iPhoto, and iMovie (which are not part of iWork) are also free. If you activated your device before Sep 1, 2013, your device does not qualify.
Try this:
Go here to verify your device registration (you'll need to login using your Apple ID credentials):
https://supportprofile.apple.com/
You can view your registered device(s) here and if there are any you've missed registering, you can do that as well. You can also register new devices here. Afterwards, visit the App Store and your free apps should be available to you.
*IF* this does not work, continue as follows:
Log out of the iTunes Store on your device:
Settings>iTunes & App Store...tap your Apple ID, then select "Sign Out"
Reset your device:
Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.
After the device has restarted, sign back in to the App Store as above. Try to download the apps again from the App Store.
You have to download them manually from the App Store.
After activating your iPad, go to the App Store and search for your free apps:
1. Pages
2. Numbers
3. Keynote
4. iPhoto
5. iMovie
6. GarageBand
If apps are still showing the price: sign out>reboot>and sign in again
Settings>iTunes and App Store>Apple ID
This did not work...still showing a price for each app...I did what you suggested, precisely. What next?
1. Have you activated your iPad?
2. Did you sign out, reboot and sign in again?

Did you use the Apple ID the iPad is registered with?
Yes, I did both...but still showing prices. My wife has two apple IDs...left over from the 3G era iPhone. That is the App Store and iTunes ID. She uses the icloud account for everything else including registering this new ipad. I think that is why we are having the issue...now, how to solve that????
1. Sign out of wrong Apple ID
2. Sign in with the registered Apple ID (the one that was use to register the new iPad)
Settings>iTune and App Store>Apple ID
I tried that too...nothing changed, same prices showing up....no clue what to do now...any more thoughts???

all of a sudden I see FREE again...thank you thank you. Interestingly, I will have to go back to her old Apple ID to update a 100 other apps purchased under that Old ID. tried to update one and it told me no go...wish we could combine apple IDs...thank again
It's good to consolidate all apps under one ID.
Try and delete apps from obsolete ID and re-download using the current ID.
I absolutely agree with you, but some of her apps are not free apps, so if I delete those, I'm afraid I will have to buy those again. That probably goes for the iTunes music she bought as well, right???
