    Exactly what are the files?

If they are only Word Processing files that need to be exported to txt, doc or pdf you should look for an AppleScript or Automator workflow to do this for you.

If the files are a mix of WP, SpreadSheet, Drawing, Database it gets difficult. PDF may be your only option.

Perhaps you camn look at a Print droplet from Automator that will simply print to pdf anything you drop on it to a nominated folder.

Frankly given this experience I think you are extremely brave trying to move to Pages 5.

The chain of redundancies from before AppleWorks, then to Pages '08/'09 and now to Pages 5 is just putting all your eggs in another Apple basket that Apple will withdraw from you without notice and without an upgrade path all over again.

My Appleworks 6 files are all word processing files. Your remarks have made me consider updating.  But how long will it be before my operating system becomes obsolete and I will be forced to update (or will I?)? Thank you for your help.

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the new Pages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.

10.6.8 is already pretty well obsolete, but it continues to work well enough. However the next time you buy a new Mac you will have to have the then current operating system, which won't run AppleWorks, so you need to be thinking ahead about how to handle this.

Success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

    Hi!

I will go on using Snow Leopard until something better comes along. So far it hasn't.

Pages 09 can open AW6 wp documents. So can LibreOffice which is free.

Thank you for the information.  It looks like I will have to update and if I need an Appleworks 6 file, I can drag it onto TextWrangler without the formatting.

Try it first. You will presumably get all the formatting codes displayed around the actual text content. This can include a lot of spurious page breaks.

LibreOffice is free and you can use it in Snow Leopard.
