Q: New Macbook Air, Can't Open Messages

I have a macbook air, only a couple of months old. I cannot open 'messages' from any place on the computer...It had worked fine until now. I can see the taskbar open, but I cannot click on anything. I tried opening from finder and I got the following message: 'the application 'messages' can not be opened. -1712'. This computer is brand new so I am very frustrated and not that happy about it...PLEASE HELP!

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

If you haven't already done so, restart and try again. If an application won't quit and prevents restarting, force quit. As a last resort, force a shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Then press it again briefly to start up.

I've done the force quit too but as soon as i log back in it still doesn't work
