[HELP] Search for emails inside Mail app not working - But spotlight search for mails Work!

Hi guys I have a brand new Macbook Pro 15'' Late 2013 (haswell) and Mail search stopped working two days ago, its not an indexing problem because if I search it on spotlight it finds the email.

I've tried everything that is described here already.

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11798?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I deleted the ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData Envelope Indexes, rebuilt the Mailbox, removed the account and added again. I've tried the mdutil -s command on terminal just in case but index is enabled.

I dont know what else to try. Is someone experiencing the same problems as me? Was someone able to fix it? I spent almost this 2 days searching on threads of this forum, but none fixed my problem so decided to create a new thread.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

So I had to reinstall OSX from scratch on the Macbook pro, had no choice, what a mess. Anyway spotlight works fine now. I turned off spotlight on the iMac it went crazy. I can not clean reinstall OSX on this one I need it continously for the next 4 weeks or so. Also I had problems on the Macbook Pro with migration assistant something I have never had before when using it, i.e. pre Maverick, whatever that means. And so I hope there will be a fix from Apple soon in the mean time the other Macs will not be updated to Maverick.

Same problem here. I have a new Macbook Pro with OS X 10.9.1. Email folder is copied from previous Macbook, containing various accounts (pop3, exchange, imap) and 5 years of emails. It worked for two weeks but now search in Apple Mail finds only a small share of my emails. Search in Spotlight finds more.

On a sidenote. I switched from Snow Leopard. I often heard that Snow Leopard was a much more stable release than all subsequent OS X version. That is also my experience. I've run into several bugs in Mavericks in the short time that I have been using it, this is just the latest one. Scrolling is jumpy and the computer hangs regularly during shutdown. Plus lots of incompatibilities, and thus even though I waited half a year in the hope that the worst bugs and incompatibilities in Mavericks will have been fixed. Very disappointing.

Hi

It is a bug and nothing else, spoke to various Apple folks and engineers. Clean reinstall of OSX Maverick 10.9.1. will do the trick, did this for one of our Macbook Pros. Could not do this for an affected iMac and unfortunately was forced to turn off spotlight. Two weeks later I had time to revisit this unacceptable issue on the iMac, turned on Spotlight (with Applications and library among a few not being indexed and searched, i.e. turned off) and Spotlight worked like a charm. Whereas I had tried this and may other ways including sudo mdutil -E / numeorus times, nothing worked.

That there are bugs with updates (for clarity the problem started on and off after updating to Maverick, and full blown with the 10.9.1 update) ok but the way Apple has dealt with this is deeply disappointing especially after the recent Apple TV firmware disaster. I am an Apple user since 1986 and have converted many to Apple computers including IT pros (which I am not).

Problem I have now on the iMac is that rules and signatures keep disappearing !

thanks

OK -

this may not work forever but it did work for me:

Re-index your Smart Folders:

Just pop into the System preferences and open the spotlight option. In there, there should be a privacy tab.

This would be where you add any volumes for folders you don't want to be searchable. Open a Finder window, and drag and drop your main Macintosh HD here. This will wipe out the spotlight index already saved.

Then remove it from the list again (use the minus sign "-" at the bottom of the little window), and it'll start the indexing process over again. It can take a little while.

(I left my computer on for a couple of hours, when I tried the same search I'd unsuccessfully tried earlier, it worked perfectly).

Give it a go - may not work for everyone (or forever) but it was a reasonably easy fix and it worked for me.

Apple seems to have modeled the search function after Windows8 for newer operating systems. (non-functional)

My search functions work perfectly on 10.6.8 - for both files and mail.

But, after updating my operating system to 10.8.5 (because much of my software won't work with 10.9) search of mail and files is screwy and mostly non-functional.

Somebody at Apple needs to be fired if you ask me. These threads are months old.

I got better search results with my Mac from the 80's.

What should really concern everyone is the integrity of all of Apple's software and techs (encrytion, etc.) if they can't even provide a basic search function to work properly, what does that reveal about the rest of Apple's software, that is not so visibly awful?
