Q: I have downloaded numerous files which identify themselves as mpeg4 or mp4 (same file), yet though I am using 10.6.8., the files are unopenable.  Can anybody empathize and explain?

I find that many of the files which download as mpeg4 or mp4 are will not open, and the error message simply says they are not recognized.  Yet the majority of mpeg4 or mp4 files download and open with no incident.  There is no apparent difference between them, other than some open and some will not.  Any ideas?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
