BBC iPlayer not working on ipad 1 through ATV

I know this has been brought up before but I can't find a straight answer. I have an original iPad 1 with OS 5.1.1. I installed the UK version of BBC iPlayer (via the UK itunes store) and went out and bought a new AppleTV device. I installed the ATV and did the update, connected it correctly and tested I can AirPlay youtube etc. This all works.

I connect to the UK via a VPN to access UK content (using the iPlayer) and I can watch and stream live TV, radio etc on the iPad, no problem. When I try and airplay TV content (live or downlaoded) it comes up with an Error Message: Content could not be loaded at this time. Please try again later.

Can anyone shed any light on this? It seems wierd that the BBC radio portion of the iplayer works with Airplay. It's almost as the BBC video stream is not compatibale. Ive tried contacting the BBC iPlayer tech people but I got a generated reply saying "we're sorry you are experiencing missing downloaded content". Got that wrong.

no ipad1 does not support airplay mirror which is required

This doesnt make much sense as there are some users who are using AirPlay and the BBCiPlayer App on an iPad1. The iPlayer supports AirPlay AND mirroring. On my iPad1 AirPlay works with youtube etc and BBC Radio so the app works ok but I just can't see the video.

On ipad1 and iphone4 and earlier an older form of tv out is supported one i think is only with cable but not 100% require the app to support the tv out feature unlike mirror which work automatic which likely made many apps pull special code to support the old type from their app

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Restart your mobile device.

iPad1 does not support mirroring.

Airplay mirroring is not the same as Airplay which pushed a compatible h264 stream to an AppleTV.

My iPad 1 battery is flat so I can't currently check if it can do standard Airplay via the iPlayer app.

My iPad 1 isn't here to try with, but when I use BBC iPlayer on my newer iPad, it streams the content in 16:9, which suggests it's not mirroring, so I'm not 100% sure.
