"file name" can't be opened

I'm getting this message a lot in trying to open downloaded software: "file name" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified devleoper. It has happened with Adobe plugins and now a solitaire game. What am I missing?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

To open the application or the file, just right-click it and choose Open.

If you do not want to do that with all applications, open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, press the padlock at the bottom left, and select "Anywhere" under "Allow applications downloaded from"
