My late 2012 iMac has hanged during the installation of 10.9.1 .
It has a small window saying "restarting" on the usual dark grey background, with the blue and white barber pole progress bar not moving.
Should I just force restart it with the on-off switch at the back?
I hate to do this during an installation.
Need an answer in the next 5 minutes!

The OS X 10.9.1 installation has finished, so you can turn the Mac off by holding down the Power button. Then, turn it on again and OS X 10.9.1 will start up without any problem

Thanks Mende, seems to have worked OK. Currently rebuilding Mail database, which seems to be taking a very long time, but just as well because it was crashing on search before.

I have a mid 2007 24" iMac and it is stuck right at the beginning saying, "Installing Software Update" the bar isn't moving at all for about an hour now. What should I do?
Hitting RETURN when the "SoftwareUpdateLauncher" gray screen appeared finally did the trick.

Thank you. MacBook Pro mid 2011 and same issue (just unsure of update number). Shut down with Power b. and seems all is ok.
