I'd like to download a 68k and PPC emulator. It seems as if downloading those ROM's is illegal. How do I get them legally?

I'm trying to access the HDD from my Performa 6400 and view it's contents. I need a PPC emulator and 8.6 (plus the necessary software) to do this. I also have a Quadra 950 (running some version of system 7) that I would like to access as well. Both compters are inoperable so I'm going to use a SCSI to USB adaptor to hook them up to my Mac Pro.

I know that some variants of System 7 are on the apple site for download but how do I go about getting ROM's? I know there is a way to rip them off of an older Mac but I don't have a lot of free time nor do I have the room in my tiny apartment for another computer. Is Apple okay with people downloading them even if they're technically Apple intelelctual property? Is there any way to get a ROM legally if I don't have access to a computer (both of mine are back in my hometown)

Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

The Performa 6400 has an IDE hard drive, not a SCSI drive. This means that you can use one of those inexpensive USB-to-IDE adapters that plugs into the drive's data interface and includes a separate power supply. Because this type of adapter isn't platform-specific, you can buy one from a PC store for about $15. The USB-to-SCSI adapter that you wish to purchase will likely cost you more than a vintage Mac sold in thrift stores. An older Mac or Power Mac with an internal SCSI bus and ribbon cable with an extra connector would enable internal connection of the Quadra 950's hard drive.
