how a force a reboot with iPad air

ipad is unresponsive and i cant turn it off normally. How can I force a restart?

iPad Air Wi-Fi, Cellular, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)

1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.

2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

Try a reset - press and hold the on/off/sleep button and the home button at the same time, until the Apple boot logo appears. Then let go, let it restart and see if that fixes things.
