how do i download apps from my iPad to my iMac

They should be downloaded when you sync your iPad with iTunes on the iMac.

If not, connect the iPad and iTunes will open on the iMac. Then, go to File menu (on the menu bar) > Devices > Transfer purchases, and your downloaded apps will be downloaded to the iTunes library on the iMac

Open iTunes and download them from there; they can be stored on a computer for backup and convenience, but not run on it.
