how do i upgrade iChat to Messaging on my iMac?

In order to upgrade to Messages you need to upgrade your OS X to 10.8 Mountian Lion or Mavericks. You should first see if your computer meets the minimum specs http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5444
Also consider that any applications you use that are coded for PPC will no longer work in the newer OS.
