Issue installing Toshiba Portable Hard Drive

I have an IMac with OS X V10.9.

I am trying to instal a Toshiba Canvio Connect 1.0 TB portable hard drive.

I have connected the portable hard drive to the iMac, and selected the Mac Driver file, then selected the Tuxera NTFS for Mac.dmg, which I understand I need to instal to enable me to write from the iMac to the portable drive. After starting the instal process, going through the welcome screen, and accepting the license agreement, I get an error message saying "Couldn't write product key to application preferences file".

Are you able to advise what I need to do to correct this?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.0.x)

You do not need Tuxera to make the external drive work. Moreover, if you are going to use the external drive only with your Mac, you should format it into HFS+, so you do not need any application.

You can do this through Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Remember to choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format.

If you are also going to use the external drive with PCs, another option is to use the "MS-DOS (FAT)" format, which you can write in it in both PCs and Macs, without having to use NTFS and any third-party application
