iTunes CPU usage 100% after ejecting iPod, must force quit

After ejecting an iPod in iTunes 11.1.3 (8), CPU usage spikes to 100%. iTunes then becomes unresponsive and I have to force quit. This happens with both my 5th gen iPod Touch and 2nd gen iPod Shuffle. It did not happen when ejecting the same devices in previous versions of iTunes with the same OS X version (10.8.5) on the same laptop (mid 2013 MacBook Air).

Has anyone else encountered this? Any solutions? Thanks in advance to any repliers.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
